The triumphant return issue of Charlie Hebdo has been highly sought after with issues going for more than £2,000 on eBay.
The satirical magazine sporting the controversial cover featuring the prophet Muhammad sold out in the UK and France within minutes of hitting newsstands.
On eBay, one issue of the magazine – likely purchased at the retail price of £2.30 – was sold for over £2,000, with ten more listings sitting at three-figure sums with hours to go at auction.
To accommodate the huge worldwide demand for the iconic publication, distributors earlier this week admitted they may extend the print circulation to three million copies. Following that, on the back of Wednesday’s reception, the magazine announced that the output will reach five million.
An eBay spokesperson said: “eBay would like to offer its deepest condolences to the people of France at this time. eBay is an open market place that does not impose restrictions around the price of items for sale, but reserves the right to remove from its site any listing that is against the principles and values of eBay’s community.
“eBay’s teams will continue to monitor for any listings related to this tragedy to ensure they comply with our policies.”
The ‘survivors’ edition’ has also been translated into English, Spanish and Arabic.
