10 questions with… Ian Milner, CEO of Iris Worldwide

What was your first ever job?
I used to do the washing up at a hotel in Buxton. I still think of myself as a professional.
Which industry buzzword annoys you most?
‘Adland.’ Where exactly is it?
Who do you find most interesting to follow on social media?
Piers Morgan is just an angry man. Can I have ‘Harvard Business Review’?
Highlight of your career (so far?)
Starting it. Ian Priest gave me my first job at IMP when I left university with my mighty PE and Movement Science degree.
What piece of tech can you not live without?
My kids’ hover-boards – literally the most unpredictable thing you can have in a household.
Who or what did you have posters of on your bedroom wall as a teenager?
I didn’t have any. I painted a massive palm tree on one of my walls though.
In advertising, what needs to change soon?
The gloominess. We are all so lucky….it should be fun.
What is (in your opinion) the greatest film/album/book of your life?
Either Outliers (Gladwell) or Range (Epstein). Lot’s of management lessons in ‘The Damned United’ and ‘Frozen.’
Which industry event can you not afford to miss each year and why?
Is my wife’s birthday an industry event?
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
Not sure. It’s a toss-up between; ‘If you think that something is not quite right, you have to act’ or ‘make time to smell the roses.’
