Welcome to The Drum’s Biz Dev 100, powered by The BD 100, which aims to recognize and celebrate important role played in the media and marketing industry by those who source and bring in new customers and keep the fortunes of businesses on track.
Below is Rebecca McEwan, one of those at the top of their field who work in the UK biz dev sector.
Name: Rebecca McEwan
Job Title: business development manager
Agency: Dentsu Aegis Network
What were your highlights of last year?
My highlight (although it was the last week of 2016) was joining Dentsu Aegis Network. Being part of a global marketing and communications network, the third biggest in the world has been super exciting. Opportunities like this don’t arise every day here in the North East so I count myself very lucky.
What has been your most memorable win – and why?
Surely every single win is memorable, no? Every time I secure a new client I have a real sense of achievement and pride. They’re all memorable in my eyes!
How would you describe your approach to business development?
I’m all about relationship building. In our industry, new business doesn’t happen overnight and the sale cycle can be lengthy, so I look to build relationships with my prospects, making sure I’m front of mind when the opportunity does arise.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Be tenacious! It can take on average 12 points of contact before a cold prospect will respond, so never, EVER give up!
What would be your number one tip to anyone starting in business development?
Always keep learning, business development is an ever-changing role within most sectors and you can never know enough. Take every opportunity to gain knowledge and learn new skills, it will only ever help you on your road to biz dev success.
What is your new business soundtrack?
